The Forest Preserve District of Will County owns or manages 23,000 acres in 71 improved and unimproved forest preserves, including 11 designated as Illinois Nature Preserves for their rare natural features. Many preserves offer amenities such as picnic shelters, campsites, canoe/kayak/boat launches and fishing access. Two preserves feature sled hills, and one preserve has an ice skating pond. The Forest Preserve District offers more than 135 miles of trails for biking, hiking, running, horseback riding, in-line skating, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, depending on the trail surface. Regional trails, which travel through the Joliet area, include the Centennial Trail/Veterans Memorial Trail, the I&M Canal Trail, Joliet Junction Trail, Old Plank Road Trail, Rock Run Greenway Trail and the Wauponsee Glacial Trail. Visitor centers offer year-round programs for all ages and interests including food truck events, kayaking, biking and hiking challenges, scavenger hunts, crafts, nature education and programs for children.
